why is the cat making these faces?
Rating: Cute
A lot of cats actually make this face! Enough where it has a dedicated internet name- the scrunge, as well as a sizable subreddit devoted to it, r/scrungycats. It looks to be a common expression many different cats make for seemingly no reason, meaning it’s likely just…something cats do that has no real deeper meaning. But this cat isn’t in pain or twitching or anything like that, it’s just making a weird face.
I’ve heard that some cats do it to smell things better
some scrungy cats are definitely doing the flehmen response (which is when cats open their mouths and poke their tongues forward to draw odors in through the mouth instead of the nose), but if you look at this picture of a cat doin’ the thing:

you can see the flehmen response is a bit more open-mouthed and doesn’t draw the upper lip back as much as this cat’s scrunge.
